The Orion spacecraft is said by NASA to mark a critical step on humanity's journey to Mars. But this endeavor could pale into insignificance when overtaken by events over which we have no control.
In this gripping and remarkable book - well and truly in the hard sf genre - Rowland questions an assumption that man has taken for granted since the dawn of civilization. Do we really own the Earth or are we tenants with a fixed term lease?
The year is 2024. That question is about to be answered.

This is my second pass through the this book. What an amazing story. I'm not sure about the scientific accuracy but the story is brilliant.Product details

Cry From a Silent Planet eBook John Rowland Philip Cole Reviews
It's got a good start with real people in it, but the ending is just fraught with all kinds of problems. I don't believe for a minute that an advanced civilization would resort to such measures. If you can travel vast distances between stars with a large group of individuals, you'd have a little more sophisticated approach than just clubbing humans into submissions. All of our politicians have tried that for years with no good results yet.

When the Slater family is forced to spend a night in mid-September, 2024, near a remote site in Wyoming, Matt Slater and his son, Jake, explore the surrounding area and find a strange door. Matt puts his hands on the door and seals his fate. The Latin writing on the door changes to note that one condition for opening the door has been met.
Within a few weeks Matt is on a shuttle, headed toward the moon. By Christmas he has met Commander Vorkan, the leader of a non-human population that exists behind the door. Commander Vorkan has essentially one requirement all humans must vacate Earth. Vorkan tells the twenty humans in Matt's party how he had annihilated all dinosaurs many eons before, and this fate will await humans unless they follow his plans for cleansing the Earth of their excess population and their greedy habits.
The story includes many scientific details, ones that will appeal to readers of science fiction. The story, though, is centered on the humans and on Matt's relationship with Vorkan, who has many human attributes himself. Vorkan's computer, MIND, also plays an important part in the story.
Highly recommended!
An excellent story. Sure didn't see plot twist coming. Very good.
well done! while I don't agree with some of the evolutionary "theories" I applaud the author's conception of mankind's first contact with an "alien " race. well worth reading!!!! it will make you "think"!
Unlike the first reviewer, I do not want to spoil it for other readers by delving into the plot. Just like to say that it is a very well written and researched book. Although a science fiction thriller, the author addresses some very real concerns for the future of mankind on this planet. Found it very hard to put down - excellent.
But it's not about token tree-hugging. This book sets forth the real meaning of planetary stewardship, and pulls no punches on that issue. Plus, it does so with a fascinating story line, great characters, lots of action, and hard science. When I started reading it, I didn't put it down till 3 am. Finished it the next day. The ending will blow you away. If you enjoyed the remake of "The Day the Earth Stood Still" you'll love this book. Same theme. Totally different story line.
So where's the sequel, Mr. Rowland? I'm waiting...
At first listening through my text to speach reader I got a little confused, backed up a few pages to read the beginning against and within the first two chapters I was hooked. I spend A LOT of time listening to books every day and I'm always looking for something engaging and different. This story is wonderfully complex with great twists and turns. One of the few I hope makes it's way onto the big screen someday. Perhaps because I could see it unfold in my mind so easily.
I am hoping for a second book in this series!
This is my second pass through the this book. What an amazing story. I'm not sure about the scientific accuracy but the story is brilliant.
