Cabot Wright Begins, first published in 1964, may be one of the most neglected masterpieces in post-World War II American literature.
Cabot Wright is a handsome, Yale-educated stockbroker and scion of a good family. He also happens to be the convicted rapist of nearly three hundred women. Bernie Gladhart is a naive used-car salesman from Chicago, who - spurred on by his ambitious wife - decides to travel to Brooklyn and write the Great American Novel about the recently paroled Cabot Wright.
As Bernie tries to track down Wright in Brooklyn, he encounters a series of bizarre and Dickensian characters and sets in motion an extraordinary chain of events. In this merciless and outrageous satire of American culture, cult writer James Purdy is unsparing and prophetic in his portrayal of television, publishing, Wall Street, race, urban poverty, sex, and the false values of American culture in a work compared to Candide by Susan Sontag.
Considered too scabrous for the stifling culture mores of the early 1960s, Purdy's comic fiction evokes "an American psychic landscape of deluded innocence, sexual obsession, violence and isolation" (New York Times)

If you like your satire wrapped in superb writing, this book is for you. It's so good that, as I read it, I kept thinking 'No wonder we haven't heard more of James Purdy. The publishing industry must have performed a hatchet job on him in revenge for their unpleasant (?) portrayal inn the book'. Of course, there's always a certain amount of glee that comes from telling people the book is about a serial rapist. In today's world of tepid discrimination, I'm suddenly cast as a pervert for indulging in such a topic. I'm sure Purdy's world wasn't much different and that may be another reason he isn't better known. Anyway, suspend your moral opprobrium for serial rapists and read one of the funniest, most biting books you'll ever pick up.Spoiler alert! The serial rapist is not without his charm.

Cabot Wright Begins A Novel (Audible Audio Edition) James Purdy James Patrick Cronin Audible Studios Books Reviews
I was disappointed in this book. Purdy is a poor man's Vonnegut. The story is full of idiotic characters and spun with hostility. If this was meant to be a social satire--it failed.
Great depth of characters and good story development . The story keeps your mind and your emotions working. Very good.
One of the funniest books I've read in years. A satire on publishing and publishers, it introduces memorable characters with
well chosen names and an absurd plot. But it works.
REALLY GREAT
Love it. This writer is an exceptional wordsmith. This reading somehow reminded me of the book; Confederacy of Dunces, it is one of those rare books that asks you to read it again. I really recommend it.
Purdy's world is the one located just next door to the real one that we're all living in...yet his "reality" manages to cast an even brighter light on all of ours. This novel brings you to a time and place that are both harsh and comic. And he's one of those guys who writes timelessly. There's an edge to every would-be soft curve. Highly recommend.
The story is so outrageous that at times you won't believe what you are reading. If you don't like to read about gratuitous sex, this is not the book for you. It is a satire. It is cruelly funny. Purdy will unleash a zinger of truth here and there and you will laugh before your second thought of realizing how black that moment was. A much darker view of life than mine. And funnier.
