A stillborn child revived. The past and the future intertwined. One girl lives two very different lives. By all appearances, Sorcha Sloane is a typical small-town teen taking twenty-first century life for granted. While two centuries in the past, Enid Thompson is a poor farmer’s daughter in colonial New England. But Enid and Sorcha are the selfsame girl – one soul split between two bodies in a link that stretches across time. Every night while Enid’s body is sleeping, she wakes in the future as Sorcha, just as the old medicine man prophesied at her birth. And every night when Sorcha sleeps, she wakes in the past as Enid, in a frontier world on the brink of war. She only trusts a chosen few with the truth, until Ben Webster comes into Sorcha’s life and tells her his family has been desperately searching for her for over two hundred years…

This is the second book by Melissa Conway that I've read, the first was Xenofreak Nation, and just like that one, Selfsame did not disappoint. The story is so well told that at times you feel as if you're actually in the story living on the pages. I enjoyed the periods of Enid much more than Sorcha, but only because Enid's existence was galvanised by constant action and upheaval and I simply loved the fact that the love that couldn't be between her and Joseph, found it's way to Ben and Sorcha. There are a few things about Ms. Conway's writing and works that I truly love and I have to comment on two of them. The first is the fact that unlike most current YA fantasy fiction and most general fiction which is written in first person, Ms. Conway's is not, and for that I thank her. Another, for which I am incredibly grateful is her inclusion of prominent minority characters in her works that are more than just caricatures of themselves or reduced to stereotypes, which is what generally tends to happen when such characters are written by non minority authors. This author creates well rounded characters without relying on stereotypes, she refuses to pigeon-hole them and instead just lets them be people. Thanks for that, it makes the reading experience that much better when constant inwards cringing isn't a part of it.
Just bought everything that she has on Amazon, and I'm totally looking forward to seeing what the future holds.

SelfSame Melissa Conway 9780615797175 Books Reviews
I so thouroughly enjoyed this book, I wish it could be a series because it took me just 2 days to read & I am already missing the characters. So many kindle books, especially the free or cheap ones, are chock full of really stupid spelling errors that drive me crazy. This author is a REAL AUTHOR, with such a nice smooth writing style and no grammar or spelling issues (yaaay). My favorite aspect of this story is the attention to historical detail, from historical battles to the intricacies of daily life for a young woman in the 1700's. Even though it was rich in detail, it was not overdone. I never once found myself skimming ahead a paragraph or so because the points were belabored or becoming boring. If you love rich historical details that make you feel like you are there, this is a great read. I also appreciated that this story, albeit paranormal/time-travel in nature was not the typical time travel story. As crazy as it seems, it really feels like it could happen...you really feel the emotions that each girl is going through as they struggle with the helplessness of being unable to control the other one's circumstances. I wish this one could be a series, even though the story had a tidy ending, it is just one of those stories that I will miss. Am planning on reading all of this authors other books!
I first found about Selfsame on Goodsreads. I looked for the book on soon after was pleasantly surprised to find it was available on the kindle. After reading this book, I have 2 things to say but I'll condense my list so as not to bother future buyers of Selfsame.
Selfsame is the story of Sorcha and Enid, 2 distinct girls that share one soul. Sorcha lives in the present while Enid lives in the past (if I remember correctly I believe she said the 18th century). While Sorcha sleeps, Enid is awake and vice-versa. I'll be honest, I can't describe the book as well as the description provided by the publisher but I fully recommend the book to anyone who is interested in time-travel and mystery. Just to prove how well written I believe this book to be, if I had the money I would pay for your (person who is reading this) copy.
The only things I disagree about on Selfsame are how much the book costs (seriously how can this amazing book only be $.99? I would gladly pay $15 dollars plus the gas I would have to pay for a ride to the nearest bookstore) and the amount of romance in it. In my opinion, the romance was too little but then again I'm a hopeless romantic.
As soon as I read the synopsis for this book, I was excited about reading it. My favorite aspect of this book was the unique plot! There were also some fun plot twists that made reading it more enjoyable.
This is definitely a young adult novel, as it is a very easy ready. However, there were occasionally some words that might stump a lower level reader. The writing was very good and effortless, I found it very interesting and I think that Ms. Conway is a very vivid writer. I wish the book developed the characters a little bit more so that I was more emotionally attached to them, and therefore more interested in what happened to them. I did want to keep reading to find out what happened next in the plot, but I was not as invested in the characters as I would have liked to have been.
Overall, very good book - I would definitely recommend this for the middle school crowd and adults who enjoy young adult fiction.
WOW! I read so often that after a while you start to feel like books are running together and that you have read the same story who knows how many times, but I didn't feel that way about the book at all. I mean the fact that the main character has a soul that is divided is not exactly something you come accross everyday! I loved it because it was so different and the writing is just fantastic. You feel everything Sorcha and Enid feel and you cant help but feel sad for her in both her lives and yet hopeful everything will be ok. I don't want to give it away because this book is best without too much specifics I think. Just know this book is about a girl named Enid who was born in the 1700s with a soul that is split into 2 bodies. One in the 1700s and one in the current time period. She goes to sleep as Enid and wakes up as Sorcha in the current time period. My only critique would be I wish the relationships were developed a little more, but it didn't take away from how amazing it was to read. I'm definietly going to recommend this book to my friends!
